Richards Comics & Collectables (Greenville, SC)
Richard
Morgan reports:
The
event was a big success for Richards Comics & Collectables. I took over the
store in February of this year and had to make an early gamble to promote the
event as the past owners had not promoted the event in the past.
I
ordered over a thousand of the free books, ran a couple of different
commercials, also had a TV news group report on the event Friday Night before
the event. I brought in Marcus Hamilton (current artist on the Dennis the Menace
newspaper strip) as I wanted someone that would give good name recognition. I
figured most folks had heard of Dennis the Menace. Since the event is geared to
bringing in people not familiar with comics, I did not think having a comic
artist/writer would be ideal. Marcus signed/sketched more in 3 hours than he has
when attending regular conventions. The visitors, young and old, were thrilled
to meet him and he was a big hit with drawing sketches for everyone.
We lost
count, but had close to 400 people come into the store during the day. Sales
were higher than any other day, since I took over the business. We handed out
lots of books, handed out coupon good for a return visit.
All
things said and done, I am looking forward to next years FCBD!
