This is from John and Christina Yeo, the owners of
Screaming Monkey Comics in Crown Point, Indiana.
We're a small
store that happened to open our doors for business on the very
first free comic book day six years ago. Every Free Comic Book
Day so far
has generally coincided with our anniversary celebration, with
this year being our triumphant 5th anniversary.
This year, we created a large sandwich board sign for the nearby
road to let
everyone know that Free Comic Book Day was coming. We advertised
the
coming event for a month to our in-store customers, on our
website, and our local newspaper were kind enough to give us our
first feature article in
recognition of this charitable comic giveaway and our 5th
anniversary. On
top of that, we hosted a HALO videogame tournament, and gave away
little gift bags for every child that walked in----these gift bags
contained a Heroclix, Magic and Yu-Gi-Oh card from our backstock
inventory, as well as a
small flyer briefly introducing new players to these games. Throw
in
the many people who registered for our e-mail newsletter for a
chance to win the 20th Century Fox-supplied Fantastic Four t-shirt,
and it turned out to be not only our biggest sales day of the year
and a terrific day for our regular customers, but we probably had
more new faces check out our store
that day than the combined new faces in the last 6 months. It was
an
unqualified success and a very happy experience. We're really
looking
forward to next years' event!
