One of the goals of Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) was to reach out to those individuals unfamiliar with the comics specialty market, not to mention a comic book shop. To remedy this, those behind Free Comic Book Day launched a massive promotional campaign that heralded the event and spread the good word of comics to potential readers everywhere. The following news stories and FCBD mentions are the fruit of the promotional campaign’s efforts. (Links are provided where applicable and available.) Did we miss something? The weblog at Librarian.net discusses FCBD and encourages librarians to participate. * The June 21 edition of Cynopsis Kids - a daily industry e-mail for kids entertainment properties that goes out to thousands of e-mail subscribers - discussed FCBD and encouraged readers to visit the event website.

The June 22 edition of the San Jose Mercury News.

The June 22 edition of the York Daily Record.

The Lifestyles section of the June 18 edition of the Allston-Brighton TAB.

On June 23, Up & Coming Weekly reported on FCBD and the store Dragon's Lair, focusing particularly on how the event raises "awareness about the comic book industry and its promotion of literacy," and how Dragon's Lair specifically is using the event to raise funds "to benefit the Cumberland County Autism Society."

In Baltimore, retailer Marc Nathan of Cards, Comics, and Collectibles told regional audiences about Free Comic Book Day on Friday, June 25 by appearing on the Fox News morning edition with Buzzboy creator John Gallagher.

Nathan also promoted FCBD on Monday, June 28 by appearing with Marvel Knights Spider-Man artist Frank Cho on local CBS affiliate WJZ-TV's enormously popular morning news show, reaching more than a quarter million viewers in the Baltimore Metropolitan area.

TV-Channel 5, in Bloomfield, Connecticut ran a free PSA promoting Free Comic Book Day for the week of June 27-July 3. The station reaches the Greater Hartford area.

On June 28, SCIFI Overdrive broadcast a twenty-minute segment discussing Free Comic Book Day, encouraging listeners to visit the FCBD website and find a participating store near them. SCIFI Overdrive is broadcast in twenty different markets and is also web-streamed.

On July 2, the Mary Jones Show (an upbeat lifestyle radio show on the Buckley Radio Network) discussed comics, literacy, and Free Comic Book Day. The show is on a four AM station cluster that reaches most of Connecticut and the Springfield area of Massachusetts - its audience is predominantly older women, meaning that this show will reach a difficult demographic for the comics industry.

The June 27 edition of the Washington Post ran a story on FCBD that listed stores in the DC Metro area participating in the event. The story was part of the paper's Sunday Source supplement.

The New York Post got involved, too. Its June 27 edition made Free Comic Book Day the lead item in the "Hot Tips" section.

The June 11 edition of CS Daily (the e-mail newsletter for Creative Screenwriting magazine) mentions FCBD and directs interested readers to the FCBD website. The magazine targets those in the screenwriting community, hitting an influential, creative "gatekeeper" demographic in the movie industry.

Under the headline "Free manga, finally!" the Anime News Network discussed FCBD and, specifically, Del Rey's FCBD sampler and Tokyopop's free giveaway trade paperback for the event.

The June 21 edition of Northwest News discusses local efforts for FCBD.

The June 24 edition of NewsOK.com (an online venture between The Oklahoman and TV News 9) discussed FCBD, paying particular attention to the cooperation between local libraries and comic book stores. The piece quotes a public library official, who confirms that all libraries in the Pioneer Library System are participating in the event. (Free registration required.)

The Business section of the June 26 edition of the Jefferson City News Tribune. * The June 27 edition of The Wichita (KS) Eagle: In the Entertainment section's "If You Go" department, the paper lists FCBD as an "allied event" for Spider-Man 2 and lists names and addresses of local stores.

The June 27 edition of the Boston Globe discusses FCBD and participating stores in an article in its Citywide section:

For college kids trapped at school over the summer, FCBD is a godsend, according to the June 30 edition of the Arizona Summer Wildcat.

The June 30 edition of Michigan's Citizen Patriot lists FCBD among its "Top Stories," including a sidebar on participating stores.

Free Comic Book Day has been added to the event database for Vancouver's portion of the Canada.com network. The listing flags FCBD with an "Our Pick" icon from the staff.

The July 1 edition of the New Haven Advocate features a personal reminiscence about comic books, connected directly to the importance and popularity of FCBD.

TBO.com discusses FCBD under the "Things to Do" section. * The "Events" section of MyRochester.com.

MediaSharx, a site dedicated to pop culture in all its forms, gets the word out at http://www.mediasharx.com/index.php/news/1190.

Canada's KidzWorld website encourages kids to go to comic book stores for the latest comics on FCBD.

In a prime example of how working with libraries can be of benefit to retailers, the West Des Moines Public Library encourages Iowans to visit the library on FCBD for a free comic, "courtesy of Mayhem Collectibles."

Another library, the Austin Public Library, also cross-promotes with a local store, asking patrons to "help us celebrate this special day by visiting the Library's partner, Austin Books and Comics…and pick up a free comic book." The library will give free comics away on July 6 to those who cannot make it to the comic book store on July 3. An excellent example of good FCBD cross-promotion and partnership!

The Glendale (CA) Public Library system has posted information on its website about FCBD in the "Events for Teens" area, welcoming teens to meet Scott Shaw! at an FCBD event at the library.

Librarian David Bigwood, of Houston, TX, encouraged librarians to team up with comic book stores on his weblog.

A website dedicated to the mobile lifestyle - TrailerLife.com - talks up FCBD from the perspective of families traveling with young children over the holiday weekend, and points out that parents and grandparents should visit a comic book store during their travels to get free comics for the kids. * Unexplained-Mysteries.com, billed as "Your source for the latest paranormal, conspiracy and science related news, discussion and multimedia" and "one of the largest and fastest growing paranormal communities on the Internet" alerts its members to the event.

DealCatcher, an online community that helps shoppers save money and make educated purchases, tells members to hit a comic book store on FCBD.

Spoofee.com, the website dedicated to freebies and rebates alerted its readers to FCBD at http://www.spoofee.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9189&goto=nextoldest

The official Star Wars website reminds Star Wars fans to get Dark Horse's Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures title on FCBD.

Upcoming.org, a collaborative event calendar lists FCBD. * Proving that comics are universal and beloved everywhere, the House of Fusion (a website for Cold Fusion programmers) reminds its tech-y visitors about FCBD, alongside such penetrating questions as "Is a CFLOOP really needed?"

The Culture Kitchen weblog, aimed at creative professionals, encourages its readers to visit a comic book store on FCBD.

The June 27 edition of the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin (Ontario, California) featured forcewerks Productions' FCBD cover, Dr. Chaos' Comic Cornucopia, in its calendar section. * This week's edition of Tucson Weekly lists FCBD on its Special Events Calendar and encourages readers to visit Fantasy Comics.

On the portion of its website devoted to the public library, the city of Carrollton, TX has an entire page about FCBD, complete with interesting comics-related links and information about local store Keith's Comics.

Bryan Branch of Keith's Comics in Elyria, OH appeared on WEOL AM930 radio on June 30 to discuss FCBD.

The AboutMy* internet discussion network is talking about FCBD in a thread that reminds readers "If you're traveling with kids, or if you feel nostalgic for your youth, it might be fun to stop at a store and check it out." * A similar recommendation is made in the Traveling section of the TalkAbout network.

CHUD.com, an internet site devoted to news and gossip about movies, reminds movie fans to go to a comic book store on July 3. * The June 16 edition of the Farmington, NJ News Transcript reminds readers that artist Tom Grindberg will be signing at Zapp Comics on FCBD. * FCBD is listed on the Napa Valley Chamber of Commerce Community Events board.

The Saline County (AR) Public Library system reminds visitors that July 3 is FCBD.

The Salt Lake County Library system has teamed up with Night Flight Comics to give away comics on FCBD. * The July 1 edition of station KXXO (MIXX 96 FM in Washington) lists FCBD on its events board.

The Cuyahoga (OH) County Public Library celebrates FCBD: http://www.cuyahogalibrary.org/classespages/classes_youth_art.htm.

Olympia, WA's Timberland Public Library is involved, too. * The June 26 edition of the Santa Cruz Sentinel mentions FCBD in its Business section and points readers to Atlantis Fantasyworld.

The next day, the June 27 edition of the Sentinel again mentions FCBD, this time as part of a review article on comics for the Style section.

WGAL TV in Pennsylvania told viewers and web visitors about FCBD in Palmyra, PA, courtesy of Comics and Paperbacks Plus.

The Disney Comics Worldwide website let potential readers around the world know about FCBD and Gemstone's Mickey Mouse comic!

PRWeb has picked up the story of GameWorks cross-promoting with local stores for FCBD.

The website TotallyFreeStuff.com devotes a page in its Books section to FCBD. * On July 1, NBC Channel 6 in Eastern Idaho discussed FCBD in the context of a story about the opening of Spider-Man 2. * The June 30 edition of the Tallahassee Democrat spent roughly half of an article about the opening of Spider-Man 2 discussing the related Free Comic Book Day event!

The Democrat followed up on July 1 with an even longer feature in the Local section devoted entirely to FCBD. * The June 30 edition of the Narragansett Times ran an extended piece on FCBD in its Business section, including a profile of and an interview with the owner of The Incredible Pulp comic book store.

Douglas County, Ore.'s News-Review listed local store participation in FCBD in its June 30 edition. * The July 1 edition of the Press & Sun-Bulletin (Binghamton, NY) listed FCBD on its Saturday Events roster, and also ran a feature on the event in its Special News section.

Eye Weekly touts FCBD in "The Panelist," a regular column devoted to reviews of comics, in its July 1 edition.

Durham, NC's Herald-Sun lists FCBD in a story about weekend events. * The July 1 edition of the Courier-Tribune contains a wonderful article about FCBD, promoting comics as a tool for literacy and driving home their artistic merit and standing as an American artform.

The London (ON) Free Press contains an article about recent comic book industry history and FCBD in its Business section in the July 1 edition. * The July 1 edition of the Bay City (MI) Times makes FCBD a "Top Story," with an extensive article on the event, comics, and the popularity of a local teacher who dresses as Spider-Man to celebrate comics.

The Rocky Mount Telegram lists FCBD as the first event on its weekend happenings page.

Hawaii's Honolulu Star-Bulletin features a fabulous article on FCBD, complete with cover images and descriptions of many of the available titles. The July 1 story also lists all local participating stores.
